Two of the most powerful words in the human vocabulary are the words freedom and liberty. While they are what America is all about, freedom and liberty were not born in the USA. The desire to be free was programmed into the DNA of every person by Creator God. But the ability of anyone to be truly and wholly free is a gift of God – to receive that gift is a choice we must make!
The Old Testament book of Leviticus chapter 25 was written 3,500 years ago and describes God’s plan for the nation of Israel.
In Leviticus 25: 1-4 God tells the people to work their land for six years and then let it rest on the seventh year: don’t plant, don’t pick whatever grows on its own. Let it all just return to the ground! This is a good, sound agricultural practice because the land renews itself!
In verses 8-19, God institutes a very radical set of practices called “The Year of Jubilee”. It was the year of freedom because debts were canceled, lands seized were returned to their rightful owners, and slaves were freed!
Governor William Penn inscribed on the Liberty Bell: Leviticus 25:18 “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof…”
Leviticus 25 tells us what true freedom means:
V17. True freedom means peace with God.
V14. True Freedom means peace with man.
V10. True freedom means equality for all.
V16. True freedom means justice.
V10. True freedom means liberty.
V18. True freedom means outward safety and inward security.
The founders of America had a clear vision of a land where freedom and liberty would be proclaimed.
Thomas Jefferson penned these words in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident… that [we] are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights among them are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Benjamin Franklin said, “Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature.”
These men and many others of our founding fathers were people of faith for whom the sacred and the secular were not separate in their lives–many were trained in the leading colleges of their day–The Evangelical Colleges of Yale, Princeton, and Harvard.
When they envisioned a new nation, their minds might have gone to II Corinthians 3:17 that states, “Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” or to Galatians 5:1 that states, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free”.
Despots can rule without faith, but a free people cannot live without faith. Many anti-Christian groups have been busy proclaiming America was not founded on a Christian foundation. President George Washington stated, “it is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible”.
An America without God – a secular America is not an America envisioned by its founding fathers.
An America without thanks to God in its celebration of Thanksgiving is an America on the verge of losing the precious freedom it holds so dear.
Futurist and author George Orwell (1984) wrote, “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear”.
That cuts both ways:
If our Savior is openly attacked in the public square, then why can’t He be defended in the public square?
If our Lord and Savior is profaned and ridiculed in the public square, then why can’t He be praised in the public square?
Why are vulgarity and obscenity protected speech while public expressions of faith in Jesus are becoming purged and ridiculed speech?
The constitutional right to freedom of religion is interpreted by the courts as freedom from religion.
Thomas Jefferson said, “No power over freedom of religion is delegated to the United States by the Constitution”.
It’s a lie to believe America should be a secular and godless America – it’s a lie to believe that America is two nations: one red, one blue. In defense of freedom and liberty, there will only be one color on the field of battle – the red blood of our brightest and our best who believe with their life.
“America, America, God shed His grace on thee…”
It’s time for America to choose to stand up and say it is God who has blessed America – so don’t be silenced:
• Say it in the house.
• Say it in the schoolhouse.
• Sait in the halls of Congress.
• Sait it in the public square.
And proclaim it in a wavering world.
Free at last, free at last. Thank God almighty, in Christ we are free at last!
